Openness matters to us. Anyone who wants to preserve this place – anyone who wants to become part of this community project – has a right to know what it is about. Not wrapped in gloss, not dressed up in soothing generalities.
So: what is the condition of the Erlöserkirche? What has been done so far? And what comes next?
The interior – beautiful and challenging at once
Anyone who knows the Erlöserkirche from the inside knows it immediately. This space is impressive – the vaults, the stained-glass windows, the ornamentation on walls and ceilings. And this space shows the traces of time. The fabric – ceilings, walls, floors – needs attention. Not at some point. Now.
The interior renovation is the heart of the friends' association's work. This is where the focus lies. Because if the fabric is not secured, everything else suffers: the atmosphere, the usability, the beauty of this place.
Why is it not going faster?
That is a fair question – and it deserves an honest answer.
First: a listed building of this size and age demands care. Every piece of work must be coordinated with the responsible heritage authorities. Every intervention in the historic fabric has consequences that must be known in advance. This is not bureaucracy for bureaucracy's sake – it is the respect a place like this deserves.
Second: it takes funds that we first have to build up together. The friends' association is small, volunteer-run, and at the beginning of its public presence. This website is part of that: becoming visible, building trust, winning more people for this community project.
What is not possible are shortcuts. What is very much possible is moving forward step by step – and documenting every step along the way.
What has already been achieved
It is not as if nothing has happened. In recent years, parts of the ensemble have been secured and stabilised. Measures that may not look spectacular from the outside, but which lay the foundation for everything that follows.
Mr Kupfernagel has documented parts of this work photographically. We will gradually show this documentation here – a real before-and-after look at what is possible. Because pictures tell more than any description.
What comes next
There is currently no ongoing, finalised project with a fixed financing plan. What there is, is a clear priority: the interior. And the will to build up the necessary funds together.
That is not a weakness. It is the starting point of a community project that is just beginning to stand on its own feet.
